North York Moors

The North York Moors National Park was designated in 1952, one of the earliest in the country. It stretches across a wedge of high ground between the North Sea and the Vales of Mowbray and Pickering, and includes the largest continuous area of heather moor in England. The plateau is dissected by tumbling becks and rivers flowing through wooded valleys. Ancient tracks stride along the tops, once used by monasteries and traders, now making ideal routes across the Moors, with wide-ranging vistas from the coast to the Pennines. The North Sea coast makes a great arc around the Moors from Teesside to Scarborough, pierced halfway by the estuary of the Esk at Whitby. The cliffs rise to the highest point on England’s eastern seaboard at Boulby, with a coastal path (the Cleveland Way) running the length of the Park. To the west, the long escarpment of the Hambleton Hills draws the eye of travellers on the East Coast Main Line or the Great NorthRoad, stretching north from Thirsk, with the turf-cut figure of the White Horse looking out from the hillside near the notorious hill climb of Sutton Bank.
